Once you regain control of Link, the heart meter has disappeared.

Also, if you are wearing the Serpent's Toga, Link will turn to stone after getting a item despite a dialog still going on, which is interesting as the Serpent's Toga won't turn Link into stone if he's talking to a normal NPC.
