Ocarina of Time
The Shadow Temple is a horror themed dungeon consisting of Ocarina of Time's 'scarier' enemies such as Floormasters, Wallmasters, Dead Hand and ReDeads. It is commonly voted to be one of the scariest dungeons in the series. Bloodstains and torture device can be found within the dungeon.

Theory
Due to the fact that the walls are blood drenched and there is evidence for torture mechanisms inside the temple, perhaps it was used by the Royal Family at one point to dispose of/interrogate criminals. This is backed up by a mysterious voice found within the temple, "Shadow Temple... Here is gathered Hyrule's bloody history of greed and hatred..." and that the Shadow Temple is completely out of reach bar the Nocturne of Shadow, possibly to prevent the inhabitants of Kakariko to discover its bloody purpose.
