Requirements

  • You must not yet have fought the Stalfos in the room before Dark Link in the Water Temple

Instructions

  1. Explore the Water Temple normally until you reach the room prior to the one with Dark Link in it.
  2. Bombchu Hover your way up to the highest point in the room.
  3. Resume normal exploration of the Water Temple until you get to the north fork of floor 1F.
  4. Head north into the next room from the room connecting to the main room.
  5. Head off to the nook in the left side and reach a locked door within that nook. Make a note of this door for later.
  6. Go back and defeat the Stalfos in the room prior to Dark Link's room.
  7. Return to the door noted back in step 5.

Result

The door is now unlocked, despite not having used a key to open it.

Explainations

Defeating the Stalfos in the room prior to Dark Link and raising the statues therein unlocks the locked door along the 1F north leg. Conversely, if you unlock the door in step 5 using a key, doing so will also raise the statues in the room prior to Dark Link without having to fight the Stalfos; the Stalfos can still be fought, but now for no effect. This is due to both the locked door along the 1F north leg and the statues in the room prior to Dark Link sharing the same internal flag; raising the statues unlocks the door, and unlocking the door raises the statues.

The locked door on the 1F north leg is, in fact, the door that the Bonus Key goes to.

This entire oddity was fixed in the 3DS remake; the two actions now have separate flags and are now no longer tied to one another.
