Ocarina of Time Miscellaneous Glitches - Saws Without Nuts
Requirements
- You must not have obtained the Deku Nut upgrade from the Forest Stage.
- You must also not have obtained the Poacher's Saw in the adult trading sequence.
Instructions
- Do the adult trading sequence until you get the Odd Potion in Kakariko Village.
- Trade the Odd Potion for the Poacher's Saw in the Lost Woods.
- Return to being child Link, then go to the Forest Stage.
Result
Due to a programming oversight in which the Deku Nut upgrade at the Forest Stage and the Poacher's Saw in the adult trade sequence share the same internal flag, the game will think you've already received the Deku Nut upgrade from the Forest Stage upon receiving the Poacher's Saw, even if you haven't received it. Due to the game thinking you have, however, this results in the Forest Stage giving the typical random results with the Mask of Truth even on the first wearing.
This does not happen in the 3DS remake, as the original programming oversight had been discovered by the time of its development cycle, and as such, the Deku Nut upgrade and the Poacher's Saw are now separate flags in the 3DS remake.
Notes
The first half of the video demonstrates primarily why previous theories about the Deku Nut upgrade becoming unaccessible turned out to be wrong. The second half of the video actually shows the glitch in action.
