Instructions
- Call Epona, get on her and go to the Gerudo Fortress Horseback Archery Range.
- Use either the Ocarina or Deku Nuts to dismount Epona.
- While making sure Epona stays in the archery range, make your way back to the Gerudo Fortress, at least as far as the small flag on a rope by the Gerudo in white.
- Press "A". Link will be teleported back to Epona who is up in the archery range and there will be no textures.
This also works the other way around; if you take Epona into the Gerudo Fortress, dismount her using the Ocarina or Deku Nuts, go up to the archery range, and press "A", you'll end up in an untextured Gerudo Fortress.
Explanation
Some games have maps and levels that are too large to fit in the console's memory. The Gerudo Fortress and Archery Range are an example of such a map, as is the Temple of Time. In order to make these maps accessible, the game developers used a common technique called "loading points". What happens is, when you're in the Gerudo Fortress, only the Gerudo Fortress is loaded -- the textures, objects, and people in the archery range are not in memory; they effectively don't exist.
When you go from the Gerudo Fortress to the archery range you pass through an invisible spot called a "loading point". When you pass through this loading point, the Gerudo Fortress's textures, objects, and people are removed from memory (they basically cease to exist) and the archery range's textures, objects, and people are loaded into memory.
-
When you teleport from one section to another using the Poe Link glitch, you never pass through the loading point, and so the section you're heading into (the area that Epona is in) never has its textures, objects, or people loaded. This results in the area being invisible, giving the appearance that you're riding in the sky.
