Instructions

  1. Activate the Infinite Sword Glitch.
  2. Make sure you have the Bow/Slingshot and Bombchus on the C buttons (it does not matter if you actually have any arrows/Deku seeds). Hold the Z button.
  3. Hold the C button for the Bow/Slingshot so Link gets an arrow/Deku seed ready (or nothing if you don't have any).
  4. Backflip.
  5. Pull out a Bombchu and press the R button in quick succession.

Result

Link will drop the Bombchu, which will immediately explode since it's in the air. It will then be blocked by Link's shield who will then hover in mid-air indefinitely. You can repeat this trick to get very high and far and essentially get anywhere in the game without needing a Gameshark.

If you are too near to the ground Link will drop to the ground automatically after a short moment. In this case you either have to do two backflips in quick succession or start from a ledge. Or with bombs, to overcome low ground, you can also staircase hover: just place two bombs next to each other in quick succession, and backflip twice in time to the bomb explosions (see second video).

Notes

  • The demonstration in the video starts at 0:26.
  • As Adult Link you can also use your Hookshot. Or, if you have the Hover Boots, you can use that to eliminate the charging part entirely.
  • You can also do this trick with Bombs. Pull one out and wait until the fuse is very short, then backflip and hold out your shield. It can be used with certain enemy attacks too (like the Deku Nuts that the Deku Scrubs shoot).
  • If you're against a wall, the Bombchu will climb up the wall when you release it. In this case, you must either wait until the Bombchu is about to explode, or simply use bombs.
  • Note that using this trick over a void will cause the game to crash. The Gamecube version and emulation are notable exceptions to this rule.
  • You can also jump to the side instead of backflipping. It is rather tricky though because Link moves quickly and so easily moves out of the blast area of the Bomb(chu).
  • You can't hover over surfaces which would cause you to slide (like the room in the Water Temple with the platforms moving up and down). If you try to, you'll get stuck and have to draw your sword to get out.
