Instructions

1. Do the Any Item On Epona glitch with the Deku Mask on a C-button.
2. Once you're in control of Link (on Epona), back her a little away from the statue and press the C-button that the Deku Mask is on.
3. Press A, and then press A again to get rid of the text saying you're not tall enough.
4. Move Epona a little and Deku Link will be riding on her.
5. Stop Epona and press A to dismount.
6. Remove the Deku Mask.

Result

You'll now have the Deku Nuts on the B button. As long as you have some Deku Nuts in your inventory you can use them with B.

Explanation

What seems to happen is that mounting and dismounting Epona as a non-human form of Link equips that other form's B item to the B button. Deku Link's B item is the Deku Nut, and Zora Link's B item is the Boomerang (and both of those facts seem to imply that one item can have multiple "behaviors" depending on what form of Link is using it).
