There are multiple ways to do this glitch.

Using a Bottle (works anywhere)

Instructions

  1. As either Normal or Zora Link catch something in a bottle (fish is recommended as it is easy to recapture).
  2. Link will now hold the bottle in his hand.
  3. Hold Z-target and press R and the C button (with the bottle on it) at nearly the same time, R about a millisecond earlier than C.

Result

If you did it right Link will act as if he's about to empty his bottle but will stop with the camera still zoomed in on front of him. Now you can move around with the time stopped. Your movement controls will be reversed, the status icons will not be visible and you cannot use your items and most A button actions.

Notes

  • One very cool aspect of this glitch other than stopping time is the ability to open large treasure chests and getting the item inside without the chest's state changing, this means the chest will act as if it was never opened so the item can be gotten unlimited times. This is especially useful in the area connecting the Mountain Village to Goron Village with the chest under the lake containing a heart piece. If you haven't opened that chest yet, you can use Zora Link while the glitch is in effect to keep opening it and increase your max hearts to ridiculous amounts. Do not save (by rewinding time) unless you want your number of hearts to be permanent.
  • The way your movement works depends on the direction the camera was facing when releasing your bottle's content. If you stand in front of a wall which causes the camera to move to the side you'll be walking sideways with up/down on the control stick and vice versa.

In the Laundry Pool Area

Instructions

  1. Make sure you have a half a heart or less.
  2. Go to the Laundry Pool area of Clock Town(the place outside of Kafei's house).
  3. Stand on the bridge facing the fairy (you can't have saved her yet) and equip the bomb mask.
  4. Aim yourself directly at the fairy, and jump at her. Right before you hit her, use the bomb mask and explode.

Result

If you aimed and timed it correctly, the camera should be stuck and the clock at the bottom of the screen will be gone. Since you lost all of your hearts, the camera and time will be stopped as though you had died, but since the fairy healed you, you can still move around.

Notes

  • If you try to open the door to Kafei's home, nothing happens.
  • The laundry pool is not the only place you can stop time by killing and healing yourself before you land on the ground. You can also do it goron bomb jumping into a recovery heart with the bomb killing you. The dying cutscene is not disabled if you stop time that way unlike the other two ways of getting that glitch.

Using Gossip Stones

Instructions

  1. Go up to a gossip stone so that the "A" button says "Check".
  2. Take out your ocarina.
  3. Press "B" then immediately press "A".

Result

If you timed it correctly, the camera should be stuck and the clock at the bottom of the screen will be gone.

Notes

  • If you travel to a new area, or go into first person view, the glitch will stop working.
  • The buttons for "Left-C", "Right-C", "Down-C", and "B" will not work.
  • During the glitch if you pick something up and then throw it away (or drop it), you can look around with C-Up. However, the camera will not move inside Link's head, but the control stick still makes his head move around. Since the C-Up button is acting differently it cannot be used to fix the glitch, the only way now is leaving the area, otherwise you're stuck.
  • Getting on Epona will make the timer and the A and B button icons reappear, but you will not be able to use C-Up anymore.
  • Losing all your hearts will lock up the controls and make Link stand still, unaffected by any enemy attacks.
  • The glitch also works in Ocarina of Time but has less effect on Link, time will not stop, status icons will still be visible, and the items and A button actions can still be used, C-up will not work however and the camera still behaves as in Majora's Mask. Using any items that moves the camera around in a cinema-like fashion (eg. Ocarina, Din's Fire, or Bottle item) will fix the glitch, jumping on/off a ledge, going into water, getting hurt, mounting Epona, or leaving the area will also fix it.
