Instructions

  1. Equip an empty bottle to any of the C-buttons, but make sure the item you want to turn into a bottle is not on a C-button.
  2. Find a bug/fish/fairy/blue fire.
  3. Stand in front of the bug/fish/fairy/blue fire so that when you swing the bottle it will be caught.
  4. Swing the bottle. Pause the game mid-swing, and place the item you wish to turn into a bottle on the C-button that the empty bottle is on.
You need to pause mid-swing, and you need to time it well. Pause too early and the glitch won't work; pause too late and the game'll ignore the button press (it won't pause).
  5. Unpause the game. The bottle swing will finish and you'll catch the bug/fish/fairy/blue fire, Link will hold up the bottle and tell you what you caught.

Result

You have now turned the switched item into a bottle with whatever it is you tried to catch in it. All items except the 3 Magic Arrows (which can't be equipped to a C-button) can be turned into bottles. If you turn an item into a bottle and then save, you cannot get that item back, with Deku Nuts being the exception (collect more Deku Nuts to recover them and get rid of the extra bottle). A bottle that replaced an Adult-Link-only item can only be used as Adult Link, and vice versa for Child Link items. Extra bottles with a fairy in them will not automatically revive you when you die.

Explanation

The mechanics of this glitch are simple, really. Let's say you equip a bottle onto C-Right and then catch a fairy with it. The game replaces whatever is on C-Right with a Bottled Fairy. In this case, we're doing a bait and switch: we're swapping the bottle with something else, and that something else gets replaced -- permanently.

Oddities

  • If you replace the Claim Check and then look at the map, an arrow will be pointing to Kakariko Village as though you are meant to go there.
  • Replacing the Magic Beans will cause a blinking area of black space to appear on the Items/Equipment sub-screens.
  • Replacing the Deku Nuts will cause the second digit on the Deku Stick icon to turn into a grey 0.

Notes

To have 23 bottles, see Reverse Bottle Adventure.

Looks like someone went all-in on this one...

Instructions

3DS Backflip Method

  1. Equip a bottle and an item you want turned into a bottle to X, Y, I, or II
  2. Find a bug/fish/blue fire.
  3. Capture the item from step 2
  4. Backflip and press the button for the bottle, then the button for the item you want overwritten (NOTE: Deku Sticks, Bombs, and Bombchus must be at 0, and spells cannot be used unless magic is too low for the spells to be cast; Farore's Wind can only be used in dungeons)
  5. That's it! Say hello to your new bottle! Wash, rinse and repeat for more bottles.

Result

The item you wanted turned into a bottle is now a semi-functioning bottle!

Oddities

  • Poes or milk cannot be placed in a duplicated bottle, as they aren't recognized as item slots holding bottles.
  • Fairies in duplicated bottles do not auto revive Link.

Notes

Not all items can be duplicated... most unfortunately. The number's in... and it's a mere 12, as the Fairy Bow, Slingshot, Hammer, Long/Hookshot and both boots cannot be duped, as Link pulls these out during the backflip. If you absolutely need more extra bottles, try the Reverse Bottle Adventure glitch.
